| | | Kindergarten | Mary Kulas | | | | I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, newsletters, report cards, and parent-teacher conferences. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. You can call school (693-2675), send a note, or e-mail me at mkulas@stpauls-mosinee.org
Throughout the school year there will be a variety of special school and classroom activities and celebrations. I encourage you to attend these functions when possible and to support them by sending needed supplies or treats. Your support of school activities makes you child feel important and sends the message that you value school.
During the year we make traveling books. This is a book with about four or five pages made by four or five students. Each student has a turn to take the book home to read with his/her family. It is important that these books come back the following day. If the books stay at one home too long we may be on a new theme or unit before the last child gets to take the book home.
The kindergarten children will begin going to mass on Tuesday, October 2 this year. We will practice and discuss appropriate mass behavior before that time. We will attend mass each week on Tuesday except for some occasions when mass may be on a different day. I will try to keep you informed. Watch the church bulletin. Refer to the student handbook for the mass dress code. Each kindergarten child will be pared with an older student for mass.

Spelling
We use the Macmillian McGraw-Hill spelling program. Each spelling unit correlates with the weekly story from the reading series. Spelling words are also the vocabulary words found in the reading story for each given week.
Students have three spelling tests weekly: a preview test, check test, and sentence dictation test (with challenge words).
There are 36 spelling units. Each unit covers phonetic skills, context clues, proofreading, and writing activities.
Language
Houghton Mifflin English builds each unit from literature, which serves as the common base and model for subsequent instruction. The types of literature are nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and plays.
Every literature and writing unit begins with a piece of literature to foster an appreciation of literature, to familiarize students with a model for the types of writing they will learn to produce, and to provide a common base on which to build listening, speaking, thinking, and composition skills.
Using the Houghton Mifflin Writing Process, students are taught writing through direct instruction and modeling. The Writing Process is presented in five steps: Pre-Writing, Drafting, Revising, Proofreading, and Publishing.
Grammar, mechanics, and composition skills are taught in the context of writing and speaking. The following skills are applied in second grade: Sentence Characteristics,
Sentence Types, Sentence Structure, Parts of the Sentence, Paragraphs, Capitalization, Punctuation, Phrases and Clauses, Nouns, Verbs, Pronouns, Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections.
Penmanship
The Zaner-Bloser Handwriting program is used in second grade. The first quarter students review and practice manuscript writing. The remaining three quarters focus on cursive writing. Shape, size, spacing, and slant form the basis of the writing instruction.
Religion
Second grade religion is centered upon Belief in God, Worship of God (through liturgy and sacraments), Christian Morality, and Prayer.
The main text is Faith First, Grade Two, Legacy Edition.
Students participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time in January. In preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the supplement First Reconciliation (by the Sadlier Sacrament Program), is used.
Students receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist in April. They are guided toward this sacrament through use of First Eucharist, also a supplementary text from the Sadlier Sacrament Program.
Religion is applied in all aspects of student life and learning. We strive for a Christ-Centered classroom, as the students grow in the knowledge of God.

We make models of cells and crystals, look at what they do and observe them under a microscope. We work with simple machines. How we use them to learn how work is done and how motion affects them. We discover how energy from the sun can help or harm us by building a solar cooker. We study electricity, magnetism, and radio waves. We make motors and use magnets. We grow plants and observe how they respond to light, water and temperature. We do a lot of hands on activities and keep a science notebook.

We discover what fossils are and make clay impressions of them. We observe how dinosaur fossils are discovered and removed from the earth. We study the Pangaea theory and make maps much like that of Alfred Wagener did when he stated his theory. We learn about the rainforest, its levels and the kind of animals that live there. We study the ocean and the types of life that live in it. We learn how manufacturing and pollution are related. We take a nature walk to the Mosinee Sewage Treatment Plant and we clean up along the Wisconsin River. We note that these wetlands along the river need our protection because they are nature’s filtration system, the source of our drinking water. We make models of plant and animal cells. We work on genetics and discuss the human gneome project; its advantages and disadvantages. We learn about ecology and the study of ourselves upon the earth’s biomes and the conservation of our natural resources. How can we make a difference in the world we live in? We us lab equipment and identify lab materials and operate a Bunsen burner safely. We study the universe, its stars, galaxies, space travel, and our solar system. In studying our Earth we look at the atmosphere, the oceans, fresh water bodies, land and its interior. We also work with the movement of the earth’s crust, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, rock minerals, weathering and erosion. We use the stream table to learn about the earth’s crust movement. For fossils found on earth we examine ones we may have found or make impressions from clay and casting compound. Most importantly we learn how to care for the earth by not polluting and conserving the earth’s resources. We do a lot of hands on labs related to geology. We keep a notebook to record our data from labs and the scientific method of discovering new material.
